| What is your general satisfaction level?: | 9 (on a scale of 1 to 10) |
|
Did this profession meet your expectations: | Yes |
| If you could "do it all over again", would you have chosen this profession?: | Yes |
| Any Pros: | Get to do interesting work that I enjoy (writing, editing, project management, consulting, telling people how they should do things).
Get to work on a variety of different projects.
Only have to work with clients I like.
Low start-up costs - for the price of a computer and a dial-up account, you're in business. |
| Any Cons: | Instead of having one boss, I have many - I'm equally accountable to all my clients. During the busy times, it can be hell - human cloning starts to sound like a really great idea.
It can also be tricky working off-site - a lot of information information gets moved around within the office environment, stuff that never gets put down into e-mail or memo form, so the potential for missing some key piece of information that you might otherwise have picked up in the Women's Room is high. |
| Any Advice: | Don't feel you have to jump in all at once. Most of the work can be done off-hours, making it possible to keep a day job until you build up a solid client base. In fact, unless you're independently wealthy, I'd recommend that approach.
DON'T get into this if you have an "I want to Be a Writer" thing. You'll maybe spend 50% of your time developing original copy, if you're lucky. DO get into it if you have an "I just like to help people" thing - if you're sincerely committed to finding the best solutions to your clients' problems. |
